7 Steps For Post Apocalypse Survival

When we hear about the apocalypse we think of things such as judgment day, and the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. We also think of 2012, of mysterious planets colliding with our world, or some paranoid crackpot spewing on about government conspiracies involving aliens and what not.

Cutlery And More

The reality is that our civilization will come to an end, we simply cannot keep up with the amount of usage of resources while the globs population explodes. I don't know when the end will come, perhaps it's already started I don't know. What I do know is that each and every one of us needs to be prepared to survival the aftermath of a collapse in civilization.

Cutlery And More

So what can you the average hard working person do with a limited budget and bills to pay do to prepare for this event. Here are 5 steps you can take to get yourself post apocalypse ready. For more useful information please visit my website The Razors Edge or my blog Beyond The Wire for more information of tips, advice and videos of survival tips.

1. Stay in shape or get in shape

You don't have to have a perfect body, but the better shape your in the faster wounds will heal, your immune system will function better, your confidence will improve, and your ability to think clearly under stress will greatly improve. You should concentrate on strength building and endurance building exercises, such as running, hiking, swimming. Practice hiking with a backpack or " Bug Out Bag " to get your body used to carrying a heavier load. Make sure to eat right, this doesn't mean you can't have beer and hot-dogs, just don't go overboard.

2. Take courses

Knowledge is power especially in the post apocalypse world, learn as much as you can. Some examples of what you should learn are basic mechanics, first aid, basic electrical courses, carpentry or some form of handy man type training, self defense, and firearms training. Most of these courses can be learned in the evenings or weekends so they won't greatly affect your schedule and personnel time. For firearms and self defense training it's important to always keep this skills up to date with regular practice. For self defense one should attend classes at least twice a week, for firearms training after your initial course, one should go to shooting ranges at least once a month.

3. Know the ground

In the event of a collapse or apocalypse you need to understand what resources you have available. You need to know how you can get out of your neighborhood or city as fast as possible. Plan escape routes, be sure to have alternate routes and plans to stay ahead of things you can't predict. This can be as simply as keeping a map of your city or town in your home office or anywhere where it's easily accessible. On this map plat possible routes you and your family can use to escape your location. Have a rendezvous location that everyone knows how to get to in the event someone gets separated from the group.

4. Have a plan

Keep the plan simple, complex plans have a tendency to get messed up very fast. For example when escaping your location you should pick a general direction where you feel you have the best chance of survival, rather then a specific town. Chances are good that town may be hostile, or not exist anymore. Like the above statement have alternate plans, again keep the back up plans simple to understand, follow and direct to others in your group.

5. Keep your cool

Will a collapse be extremely stressful, yes. Will you be tired from lack of sleep, be dehydrated, and afraid, very much so. However you need to keep your wits about you. If you are in charge of a group or family and you start to panic or crack what message does that send to the others, especially if those others are children. It will cause them to panic, once you and your group panic then stupid decisions are made, and those stupid decisions will most likely get somebody killed. Even if your ready to fall apart inside its vital to stay calm to keep your group calm who may be looking up to to protect and lead them.

6. Have a bug out bag

A bug out bag is a military term for a soldiers kit that is always packed and ready to go on a moments notice. Having a bag full of essential items you need to survive such as water purification tablets, fire starter kit, radio, rations, and a first aid kit will keep you and your group alive. If in a group you can also have multiple bug out bags to maximize the amount of gear, food, and water you can store which will increase your survival chances many times over. To learn how to build your own bug out bag, or get supplies for one please visit my website The Razors Edge (The Link is at the bottom of this article)

7. Research

Find out if there are any government shelters, or locations where the government will try to rebuild or gather survivors to protect them in the event of a collapse. Check forums and search the Internet to find like minded individuals to learn advice, and help develop a plan of action and possible contact list of other survivors who can help you.

Christmas Sales Victorinox 40521 10-Inch Chef's Knife, Black Fibrox Handle Overview

The R H Forschner by Victorinox Chef's Knife features an 10-inch blade that is 2.25-inches wide at the handle. High carbon, stainless steel blade is hand finished at Victorinox in Switzerland by skilled craftsmen. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Victorinox handles are ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension. They provide a natural fit. A good heft and comfortable, positive grip are indications of a well-made knife. A sure-grip handle with a finger guard is valuable feature since the handle inevitably gets greasy, wet, or both. Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of the handle minimize crevices what would offer hospitality to bacteria.

Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

If you are anything like me, the idea of buying, let alone actually USING a wheat grinder can be pretty intimidating. I am determined to accumulate a healthy-sized food storage and wheat is going to play a big role in that. I am also a fan of the mantra "store what you eat and eat what you store". Thus it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do some heavy duty research in order to uncover all the mysteries surrounding "wheat grinders" or "grain mills" as they are officially called. With the help of internet research, some hands on research at several neighbors' houses, and multiple failed attempts in the kitchen, I have come up with a pretty good summary of what you need to know.

Cutlery And More

Types of Wheat Grinders

Cutlery And More

Manual Wheat Grinders

Pros

Inexpensive Can be used with no power source Small to store
Cons

SLOW to grind (mine took 6 minutes to grind one cup of flour) Except for the very high-end models, you cannot grind a fine flour Inconvenient (messy and hard to fit a large bowl underneath)
KitchenAid Attachments

Pros

Less expensive than an electric grinder Small to store Convenient to use and then mix bread in the same machine
Cons

I have heard from multiple sources that these units will BREAK your KitchenAid mixer Not as fast at grinding as electric grinders
Electric Wheat Grinders

Pros

Grinds very fast Useful for many types of grains, beans, nuts, etc. Easy to select how coarse or fine to grind, and has a large range
Cons

Fairly expensive, even for the lower-end models Must have a generator or battery pack to use with no electricity (unless you buy a high end model that comes with a manual crank) A large appliance to store in your kitchen
Prices of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Low: -30 models will not grind flour, only coarse corn meal, etc. Not very useful. Medium: -5 is a good price range. Back to Basics Grain Mill is . It can grind fine enough for bread flour but not for very fine cake flour. Wonder Junior is higher-priced at 9 but it can grind into cake flour. High: Up to 0 for the Country Living Grain Mill. It is quicker than other manual grinders and is able to grind a fine cake flour.
KitchenAid Attachments

0-120, some may be used on any stand mixer.
Electric Wheat Grinders

Low: Under 0 for grinders such as the Blendtec Grain Mill. Its drawbacks are it is very noisy and cannot do very coarse grinds. Medium: 0-0 can get you a great grinder. The two most popular electric grinders are the WonderMill and the NutriMill. In my tests I found the WonderMill to be faster, quieter, cleaner, and easier to store. And priced at 9 it is even cheaper than the NutriMill which is 9. High: Over 0 is an unnecessary amount to spend in my opinion. There are heavy duty models out there but you can get the job done with the mid-range models.
How To Use Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Attach wheat grinder to your counter top Place a bowl underneath Pour the wheat in the funnel Turn the crank (for a LONG time) Wheat will filter into the bowl below
Electric Wheat Grinders

Select how fine or coarse you want to grind Turn on the machine Pour the wheat in the top Wait for it to grind into flour (super fast) Turn off the machine and pull out your canister of wheat
How To Use Fresh Ground Whole Wheat

Whole wheat bread can be delicious! I have gone through a lot of recipes trying to find the perfect balance of flavor, nutrition, texture, etc. for my wheat bread. Experiment with different recipes and types of wheat until you find what your family prefers. We liked using hard white wheat in a recipe that included gluten and oatmeal. Pancakes even your kids will love! I took an IHOP corn cakes recipe and simply swapped all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour and it was amazing. My kids ate 3 each at one meal. They are delicious drizzled with honey over top. Whole wheat oatmeal cookies you can't resist. I haven't tried any of these recipes yet but several of my friends said they prefer whole wheat cookies to regular cookies. Who wouldn't want an excuse to make cookies, hey it's rotating your food storage. Much much more. I grind up a large Tupperware full of hard white wheat flour and store it in my freezer (it retains the nutrients that way). Whenever I do any baking I replace half or all of the flour called for with my whole wheat flour. If it is as good or better I add that recipe to my food storage recipe binder. It's a great way to experiment until you find what works for you.
My Recommendations

Emergency-Only Usage

If you are planning to use your food storage and wheat grinder only if an emergency situation arises, it is not worth the expense and hassle of buying and storing an electric grinder. At a minimum you should get the Back to Basics Grain Mill but I would highly recommend splurging for the Wonder Junior.
Every-Day Usage

If you plan to "store what you eat and eat what you store" I highly recommend the WonderMill Grain Mill electric grinder. If you are not planning to find an alternative power source for an emergency situation, then eventually pick up a Back to Basics Grain Mill as well. The price of these two combined are still cheaper than high-end electric grinders that have a manual crank option, and the functionality of the WonderMill is better for frequent usage.

Top 5 Christmas Gifts For People You Don't Really Like

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter what the person did to you. What is important is how you're going to let them know they hurt you by your selection of gift for them. While some people would just not get a gift for someone they don't like, others enjoy giving a gift that also sends a message - subtle or not! If you've been thinking about getting a gift for someone you don't like, here are five ideas.

Cutlery And More

Top Five Gifts for People You Don't Like

Cutlery And More

Lump of Coal - This has been used to much it's almost a cliche, but it can still send a lighthearted message that you don't like a person. If you really, really don't like them, send them a HUGE piece of coal so that they understand the extent of your dislike for them. Instruments - If the person you don't like is a parent - or a pair of parents - you can give their child a drum set or some other loud music instrument. This will be loved by the child and hated by the parents - win/win! Fruit Cake - Some people actually do like these - so make sure your target doesn't - but this is a gift that says, "you're not really worth my time and I don't know you that well and I think you're fat and eat a lot so here you go..." All with a little bit of cake! Toothbrush/Mouthwash - Even if the person you don't like has perfect teeth and breath, this gift is going to get them thinking. It's a little tacky, but you don't like them so it doesn't really matter. It will definitely mess with their mind a little bit. Knife Set - If you hate someone because they stabbed you in the back? Send them a cheap set of knives as their Christmas gift. They may not get the point, but you can point this out if you're still talking to them.

There you have it - five great gift ideas for people on your Christmas list that you don't really like. With a little imagination, you're sure to come up with something equally sinister that fits your disdain perfectly. If not, give it some thought. You still have some time before Christmas 2010. If nothing else, sometimes no gift is the best way to send a message to someone you don't like.

What is the Best Survival Food to Store and Depend on During Emergencies?

Disasters can happen where you have to rely on your food supplies at home. Getting together some survival food isn't as complex as it might seem. Having the best emergency survival foods, those that won't spoil but still offer good nutrition, are the ones to keep stored for those unpredictable situations.

Cutlery And More

High Quality Survival Foods

Cutlery And More

Survival food bars - You can get these in 3600 calorie per day packs. It won't be the best tasting but they will store awhile and provide massive calories. Also looking into bicyclist and backpacker's bars as those are high in calories and require no preparation.

Freeze dried survival food - There are Made Ready to Eat meals and others that are freeze dried and can be stored for long periods of time.

Peanut Butter.

Brown rice - Brown rice offers a bit more nutrition than white rice and will keep your blood sugar from spiking as much.

Beans - Beans are high in protein which is a good option when meat might not be as available.

Seasoning - You don't want your food to taste bland. Keep extra seasonings to provide extra tastes.

Canned goods.

Sprouts - Sprout seeds can be stored for 2 to 3 years and can be grown in a jar in less than a week. Keep these seeds on hand to provide fresh greens which are some of the most nutritious food ever.

Food Storage Strategies

It's best to store the food you already eat. Start rotating a stock of food that you already have so that you don't have to worry as much about long term storage and expiration dates.

Keep bottles of frozen water in the freezer. This will keep the temperature of the food down if you lose power allowing you to enjoy the foods you already have at home first before using your stored food. This also provides an additional water source once thawed.

Try to focus on basic goods over commercially packaged products. They have their place in food storage, but eventually these will expire where you can always be using the basic goods in normal day to day life.

Consider gardening as an option to make your stored food last much longer. A garden can extend the life of your stored food by quite a bit especially during the growing months.

½ cup of water 1 cup granola oil 4 eggs 1 box ( 18 oz.) cake mix with pudding 1 cup of ready to spread chocolate frosting 24 gummy worms

What to Do:

Set the oven 350 degrees and preheat. Prepare muffin pan by placing paper cupcake liners into the muffin cups. Spray with a non-stick cooking spray evenly. In a mixing bowl, whisk together water and oil then add the eggs and continue whisking until blended. Gradually add the cake mix powder and stir to combine well. Fill the paper lines 2/3 full of the batter and bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the cupcake comes out clean.

When done, take out cupcakes from muffin pan and transfer to a wire rack until slightly cool. Make a coin-size hole in the center of each cupcake. Place your prepared frosting inside a parchment paper or a baggie and squeeze into the cupcake holes. Press a gummy worm into the frosting of each cupcake.

Creepy Chocolate Ice-Cream Cups

10 graham cracker tart shells 10 scoops of vanilla ice cream 20 chocolate cream filled cookies, crumbled 20 red M&M candy pieces 20 pieces of black shoestring licorice, cut into fourths

How to Make It:

Arrange graham cracker shells on a baking pan. Fill each shell with 1 scoop of ice cream then top with the crumbled cookies coating heavily. Freeze for 30 minutes to one hour, or until the ice cream has hardened. Press 2 M&M's into the front to look like red eyes, and press 8 strips of licorice into each ice cream scoop to form the spider's legs. Return to the freezer until serving time.

Chocolate Ghost Bites

You'll need:

2 pkg. (12 squares) white Chocolate 1/4 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon of butter, softened Decorating gel

How to Make It:

Melt the chocolate squares, cream and butter in the microwave for 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. When the chocolate is completely melted, cover. Freeze until firm, about 1 hour or more. When chocolate is cool enough to handle, scoop with a spoon and roll chocolate mixture into bite-size spooky balls. Place the balls into a waxed paper and freeze for 20 minutes. Use a decorating gel to draw eyes on the frozen spooky balls to resemble ghosts. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will make your chocolate spookies firm upon serving.

You will be amused how kids will respond to the ideas. They will be thrilled at first to touch the scary chocolate bites yet at the end they will eat them all. You may wrap the squirmy chocolate cupcakes in decorative plastic wrap to give as giveaway. These ideas also go for adults!

Maori Tattoos

For the Maori, who are indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, tattooing holds a sacred significance to them. Their permanent body and face markings called moko, was an important milestone between childhood and adulthood. Today the style of Maori tattoos are becoming more popular because of the intricate curved shapes and spirals that make these some of the most creative designs to be had.

Cutlery And More

Tattoos of the Maori would be full face designs, as the head was considered the most sacred part of the body. Warriors would also sometimes have swirl tattoos on their buttocks and down their legs to the knees. Instead of needles the Maori used knives and chisels and the ink was applied by means of incisions. At puberty is when a young man would get his first tattoo, and then more would come to celebrate important events in his life such as rites of passage and to make himself more attractive to women. Enduring these painful tattoos was a sign of status, strength and courage. Tattooing was a very important Maori ritual that would include music, chant and fasting. Women were tattooed less frequently than men and their tattoos would usually be on the lips, chin or shoulders.

Cutlery And More

For the Maori, each pattern of their tattoo is a symbol of personal identification showing their rank, status and ancestry. If you are interested in this type of tattoo, you should never copy their designs. If you desire to have a Maori style design, you should find a tattoo artist that has experience with these types of tattoos and he or she can design one for you that doesn't have the symbolic meanings that are sacred to the Maori.

Today popular locations for a Maori tattoo is the arm, the  top of the shoulder and down the arm, legs, the occasional buttock, on the back, and lower back for women. However some people do choose to have Maori designs on their chins and faces.

Viking Range Corporation - More Than Just a High-End Grill Manufacturer

Some of the most innovative inventions stem from someone searching for a product that hasn't been created yet. That's what happened to Fred Carl Jr., the founder of Viking Range Corporation, when he was looking to renovate his home more than twenty years ago. As a fourth generation contractor, he was familiar with the positive and negative attributes of commercial ranges, and noticed them appearing in residential homes. Realizing there wasn't a residential appliance out there that met both the rigors of high-heat restaurant-style cooking yet still conformed to strict building codes, he decided to develop his own hybrid range. After several years of research and development, by January of 1987 Fred Carl Jr. was distributing the first commercial-style residential range.

Cutlery And More

Today, Viking Range Corporation earns more than 300 million dollars in annual sales and employs more than 1,000 local Greenwood, Mississippi residents. Being a lifelong Greenwood citizen, Carl Jr. just couldn't grow his business anywhere else. With a 87,000 square foot manufacturing plant and several distribution centers located in the Greenwood area, Carl Jr. has not only created one of the largest privately held businesses in the South, but also brought revenue to this depressed small town. Home to cotton, catfish, and the blues, the Mississippi delta region is one of the most impoverished in the nation, which is all the more reason to praise Carl Jr. for his commitment and dedication to his hometown.

Cutlery And More

Carl Jr., in fact, has reinvigorated a dilapidated downtown, known as historic Cotton Row, and converted many abandoned buildings into Viking destinations. A Viking Mecca, so to speak, with 23 restored buildings and still counting. The Viking headquarters takes up two blocks of downtown and is located near Viking's Alluvain Hotel and Spa, a luxury hotel and 7,000 square foot spa that entertains not only Viking dealers and sales representatives, but also customers and would-be customers who want to tour the Viking plant or take a cooking class at the nearby Viking Cooking School. But even if you don't make the pilgrimage to Greenwood, you can still test out your cooking skills on a Viking range at any of the 16 Viking Cooking Schools scattered across the country. These state-of-the-art demo and lecture-style Viking classrooms draw more than 70,000 students annually and offer classes from regional cuisine to formal cooking and grilling techniques.

Over the years, Carl Jr. has added high-performance appliances to the Viking line up. From the first Viking outdoor grill in 1997 to a full outdoor kitchen line up in 2004, Carl Jr. has developed appliances for the Viking indoor and outdoor kitchen that exceed expectations. The newest line is the Designer Series, a full line of appliances that appeals to the homeowner looking for a more contemporary, streamlined design that can be integrated into existing cabinetry. It's a more modern look with a more competitive price point.

Hot new colors from cobalt blue to racing red define a cooking space and visually entertain the eye, creating the perfect blend of high-performance output with trend-setting style.

Even with the economic downturn, Viking Range Corporation has a bright future with its powerhouse appliances offering trend-focused styling and durable construction. Carl Jr. has created a lifestyle brand synonymous with a luxury lifestyle that many strive to live.

Vintage Kitchens of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s

1930s: The Steam-lined -Depression Era "Modern Kitchen"

Cutlery And More

By the 1930's, the kitchen was being transformed from the old fashioned kitchen to the "Streamlined-Modern Kitchen" with time saving features, better organization and much improved ventilation. The "all-electric kitchen" was promoted in popular magazines with numerous advertisements showing newly designed small and major appliances. Mixers were the homemakers dream now designed with numerous attachments that could sift flour, mix dough, grate cheese, squeeze lemons, whip potatoes, shred, slice and chop vegetables and even sharpen knives. "Depression Green" was the "in" color used on the wooden handles of kitchen utensils, on kitchen cabinets and tables and on kitchen wares. Often accessories were cream and green replacing the white and black look of the previous decades.

Cutlery And More

Other popular color combinations in the 1930s were Gray and Red or Crimson, Silver and Green, Pearl Pink and Blue, as well as the use of checkered patterns on textiles. Kitchen wares such as canisters and Bread boxes tended to be softly painted with perhaps a simple decal.

In 1935 the National Modernization Bureau was established to promote modernization throughout the country. Manufacturers competed for better designed appliances and kitchen accessories. Color began to enter the kitchens of the thirties and articles in magazines featured decorating tips on color schemes and how to incorporate the kitchen into the rest of the home. Kitchens were no longer work stations but gaining as much attention as the rest of the home. Small and large appliances were available in color and Sears and Montgomery Ward featured colorful kitchen wares and "japanned" accessories such as canister sets, range sets, cake savers, bread boxes and waste baskets.

1940s: The Postwar Colorful Era

The Post War kitchen of the 1940's began to become family gathering places and now tables and chairs made of chrome bases with enamel, linoleum or plastic tops could be added to a more spacious kitchen which replaced the smaller work centered earlier kitchens. Separate formal dining rooms were being replaced by kitchens that could accommodate the family and guests. The kitchen was becoming a very inviting space and primary colors dominated the interior décor palette. Magazines advertised products for your "Gay Modern Kitchen". Combinations of red, green and yellow or red and black were popular as well as brightly colored tablecloths, textiles and curtains. Flowers, fruits and Dutch motif were in vogue and found on shelving paper, trim, decals and kitchenwares. Appliances continued to be produced with streamlined designs, rounded corners and smaller proportions. The combination washer/dishwasher was introduced as well as the garbage disposal and freezers for home use.

1950s: The Atomic Era-Pastel Color-Space Age

Dramatic changes would occur in the kitchens of the 1950's as space age, atomic era designs and materials entered the scene. The fifties kitchen featured plastics, pastel colors such turquoise or aqua, pink and yellow (cottage colors), Formica and chrome kitchen table and chair sets matched formica kitchen counters and were easy to keep clean with messy little ones. After the war there was more time for leisure promoting kitchenware's and accessories for picnics, barbecues, parties and the home bar.

The introduction of color T.V. in the 1950s brought full color into America's living rooms where homemakers could now see all the exciting products and appliances available to them. Following World War II, there was a new generation of plastics and time for "gracious living" and entertaining. Kitchens and homes saw the transition from glass, ceramic and tin products to numerous types of plastics which made casual living easier. Melmac and Melamine dishes, Lustro-ware and Tupperware storage accessories and "thermowall" for picnics were a huge success. Vinyl was used for tablecloths, chair covers and furniture and bark cloth with boomerang and abstract shapes was popular. Tablecloths and dishcloths continued to be brightly colored and souvenir textiles were added to the home with tropical, Southwestern and Mexicana themes. Poodles, roosters and designs with kitchen utensils, tea pots and coffee pots decorated potholders, appliance covers and linens. Appliances were built-in and came in fifties colors such as turquoise, soft yellow, pink and copper.

Pumpkin Carving Safety Tips

Well it is that time of the year again and if your little ones are anything like mine, they are probably getting pretty excited about carving pumpkins. Pumpkin carving is a very entertaining hobby but as with most hobbies you need to take precautions so that you and your little ones have a fun and safe experience.

Cutlery And More

Here are a few recommended safety tips so that everyone has a happy and fun filled Halloween.

Cutlery And More

Artificial Lights

Looking for a safe and secure way to light your pumpkin? Artificial lights make great alternatives for candles. Wal-Mart and many other great stores have inexpensive battery operated lights that are designed specifically for pumpkins. If you are unable to find the battery operated lights there are also pumpkin lights out there that you can plug into a wall. Just cut a notch out of the back of the pumpkin that allows you to run the electrical cord to the wall.

Sharp tools safety

We all probably already know that sharp tools like saws and knives are needed to carve pumpkins and that taking precautions when using the tools is a necessity. However, with that being said, if you have little ones that are going to get involved with the carvings this year, extra precaution needs to be taken.

The general rule here is safety first. Always supervise your young ones if you feel that they are old enough to participate with the actual carvings this year. Just remember to take your time when carving and be mindful of the sharp tools.

Properly gutting the pumpkin

One of the most important safety tips is to make sure that the pumpkin has been gutted properly. You want to insure that there is not any hanging pulp inside the pumpkin that could possible catch on fire (especially if the pumpkin was dried out).

Candle safety

Here are a few safety tips you may want to use if you plan to use candles in your pumpkin.

1. Never leave the lit candle unintended.

2. Create a chimney in the pumpkin - Basically a chimney is a hole that is cutout from the pumpkin's upper back. The function of the chimney is to create an area that allows the heat from the candle's flame to escape from the pumpkin.

3. Place the candles in a glass jar and the glass jar inside the pumpkin. The glass jar should provide additional stability for the candle.

4. When you gut the pumpkin, make sure that the bottom of the pumpkin is completely flat. This will provide a more secure base to put the candle on.

5. Cut the bottom of the pumpkin out verses the top; you can place the candle on the floor and sit the pumpkin over it. If you do decide to cutout the bottom of the pumpkin, make sure that you are placing the candle on a secure floor that does not have a chance of catching on fire.

6. Never use a candle in an artificial pumpkin. They are flammable and artificial light should be used when lighting the pumpkin.

Carving pumpkins is a fun activity for the entire family. I few extra safety steps can help insure that everyone has a fun and safe holiday.

Christmas Sales Victorinox Cutlery 6-Inch Curved Boning Knife, Black Fibrox Handle Overview

The R H Forschner by Victorinox Boning Knife features high carbon, stainless steel blade, hand finished at Victorinox in Switzerland by skilled craftsmen.

How to Rescreen a Sliding Screen Door

If you have a sliding patio door in your home, you know that the screened portion of the door will become worn and damaged over time. With years of use, metal screens will get dents and creases, fiberglass screens can easily become pulled out of their frame, and cloth screens can be ripped, torn, or moth-eaten. One of the easiest do-it-yourself projects you can tackle at home is to rescreen your sliding door.

Cutlery And More

Rescreening the door yourself will save time and money, and the end product will result in a major facelift to that area of your home.

Cutlery And More

The first step in rescreening your door is to measure with height and width of the screen frame. Be sure to add a minimum of 2 additional inches to both measurements, to ensure that you have enough material. If you want to err on the side of caution, add 4 to 6 inches to each measurement.

When you go to the hardware store to buy new screen fabric, be sure to take some time to read about the benefits of each type of material. Look for a material that won't be eaten by insects and that contains some type of UV inhibitor to prevent fading and decay. If you live in an area where gnats are a problem, you may also want to choose a very fine mesh to prevent gnats and other small bugs from squeezing through. Keep in mind, however, that the finer meshed screens are also darker, and will let less light shine through.

There are several other items you'll want to pick up while you're at the hardware store. One of these is a product called screen spline. Spline is a thin, spaghetti-like rubber material that is rolled into a groove around a screen door to hold the screen in place. Spline comes in many sizes, so it's advisable to take along a small piece of your existing spline that was holding the old screen in place. You'll also need to purchase a special tool for rolling the spline into the groove, usually called a spline roller. Most large hardware stores will carry such tools, and they make the job much faster and easier. Some spline rollers even feature small hook-shaped knives at the end for cutting off the excess screen fabric, which is a much safer method than using a plain utility blade.

Once you're back at home with all your tools, you'll need to remove the screen door from its rolling track and find a flat place to do the work. A clean garage or porch floor can work quite well. Begin by removing the old spline from all the grooves. Once the spline is removed, the old screen fabric will pull away quite easily. If the channel that holds the spline is dirty, now would be a good time to wipe or vacuum it out.

Now you're ready to install your new screen. Center the new piece of screen fabric over the opening, and begin rolling your spline into the groove, with the screen fabric under it. If possible, having a second person to assist you with this process, by holding the screen square, is very helpful. However, if you do not have someone to help, consider taping the four corners of your screen to the door frame with painters tape. This will help to keep your screen in place as you work your way around the door. Use your spline roller tool to roll the spline into place, making sure it's deeply seated into the channel. Continue this process, working your way around all four sides of the door. When you're done, the screen should be well stretched and taught. The final step is to cut off the excess screen fabric. Perform this step carefully; you don't want to accidentally cut your newly stretched screen.

Unless your door gets a lot of use or you have young children or pets in your home, most homeowners will only need to rescreen their doors once every 5 to 10 years. Once you've completed this project, you'll have the satisfaction of having done the work yourself and knowing that you'll be ready to perform the job again when it's needed next. Now your screen door should look like new again and will be ready for years of additional use in your home.
