Shingle Roofs - How to Cut the Shingles

If you're looking for "shingle roofs - how to" information, you've come to the right place. The trend towards thicker shingles makes the job of cutting them somewhat more difficult. Here's three tools that will do the job...

Cutlery And More

Shingle Roofs: How to Cut the Shingles - Tool #1 Utility Knife

Cutlery And More

Go with a model that allows you to change blades fast without tools. Also, get one with a fixed blade, as retractable blade mechanisms get gummed up with roofing tar. And you want one that fits naturally in your hand, while presenting the blade to the work at an efficient angle. The best utility knife I've found for roofing is a Stanley Model 10-399.

Straight blades cut well on the back of the shingles and hook blades cut well on the front. So you really should have two knives in your tool belt. Keep one ready to go with a straight blade and one ready to go with a hook blade. That saves a lot of time switching back and forth between blades.

Also keep some of both blades in each knife. That way if you misplace one of your knives (which is easy to do) you will be able to get by with one knife.

Shingle Roofs: How to Cut the Shingles - Tool #2 Tin Snips

Tin snips work surprisingly well for cutting shingles. They are quicker and easier to use than a knife when cutting around pipes and vents. They also work great for cutting shingle valleys.

The only problem is... the gritty shingles are hard on the cutting edges. As such, I can't bring myself to you use brand-new snips on shingles. But when they become too dull for metal, I replace them and recycle the old ones for shingles.

Although many "tinners" use dedicated snips for right and left cuts. I've found that Wiss M3R Straight Cut (Yellow Handle) Tin Snips work fine for most all of my metal work ... and for shingles.

Shingle Roofs: How to Cut the Shingles - Tool #3 Shear

This is a tool you don't use all the time, but makes short work out of cutting shingles. It looks like a guillotine-type paper cutter, except it's heavy duty. It can be used to easily cut any shingle to just about any angle.

But it really shines on straight cuts. Say you're fitting shingles along a side wall...The shingle shear easily cuts them square and to the exact length you need.

I also use it to salvage shingle scraps at valleys and hips which have the square cut on the wrong end. The shear quickly squares up the proper end for you, putting a "factory finish" on it. It's much faster than a knife and does a better job.

There are two or three models on the market, but my preference is the "Shingle Shear" made by Howard Tools.

15 Fast, Fun and Easy Christmas Decorating Ideas

Decorating your home for the holidays does not need to be stressful or expensive. Being one of the most popular times of the year to decorate, get your family involved and have fun making your home beautiful for the holiday season.

Cutlery And More

Here are 15 Christmas decorating ideas:

Cutlery And More

1. Display your favorite Christmas collections. If you don't have a collection, now is a great time to start! My son and I collect nutcrackers and every year we have a wonderful time selecting just the right one. With a permanent marker, I write the year on the bottom of the nutcracker. Not only do we enjoy looking at the nutcrackers during the holidays, we also enjoy the fond memories of selecting them.

2. Make simple bows out of Christmas ribbons and attach them to your curtains with pins. This is a very charming look.

3. Decorate your house plants by hanging small Christmas ornaments on them.

4. Place a collection of Christmas books on your coffee table.

5. Fill a glass bowl with pine cones and Christmas balls and place on a shelf or table.

6. Wrap your staircase banister with indoor Christmas lights, garland, and bows.

7. To add scent throughout your home, tie 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks together in a bundle using Christmas ribbon. Make as many bundles as you wish and place around your home in baskets or bowls.

8. To decorate your table, tie Christmas ribbon to the stems of glasses and/or handles of cutlery.

9. To dress up your chairs, tie Christmas bows around the chair so that the bow is on the back of the chair.

10. Using a small brush or q-tip, paint the edges of pine cones with glittery gold craft paint. After the pine cones dry, place them in a decorative basket.

11. Add Christmas garland to door frames, window frames and mirrors. You can use tape to secure the garland to the surfaces.

12. Tie bows around door knobs using festive and colorful Christmas ribbon.

13. Attach garland and Christmas bows to your chandelier. You can also weave strings of red beads in the garland that will dangle down from your chandelier and reflect the light, which will add sparkle.

14. If you live in a milder climate, consider decorating with Amaryllis plants. These beautiful plants come in red and white, grow tall, and provide a very elegant look.

15. Don't forget to decorate your fireplace mantel and hang your Christmas stockings. A few fireplace mantel decorating ideas are adding garland, different styles and sizes of Santas, teddy bears, and candles. You can also display your favorite nativity scene if you have a large enough mantel.

Be creative with your fireplace mantel because most mantels are the focal point during the holiday season. Another decorating idea for your mantel is to purchase a bunch of miniature rosemary trees shaped like Christmas trees, add mini ornaments to them and line them up across your mantel. These miniature rosemary trees are readily available during the holidays and come in festive containers.

Christmas decorating is a great time to create traditions and spend quality time with your family. Get out some snacks and drinks and create a little "decorating party" that your family will love and look forward to year after year.

Happy Holidays!

Christmas Sales J.A. Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block Overview

Dull cutlery is dangerous cutlery. One of the easiest ways to maintain sharp edges on your fine cutlery is to store the knives in a block. An added benefit is that your knives are conveniently ready and waiting for the next time you need to carve a roast or julienne some veggies.

This hardwood block stores up to eight kitchen knives, a sharpening steel, and kitchen scissors within reach on the counter while protecting knife edges from the nicking they would suffer in a drawer. Deer Movement Patterns

Capitalizing on deer movement patterns will increase your chances at seeing a harvesting more mature bucks. Many hunters know the two main times that deer move. . . early morning and late evening. This is true, but there is more to it.

Cutlery And More

During early bow season, the deer will usually move right before dark. Bucks will usually start making scrape lines during this time. The problem with hunting these scrapes this early is that the bucks are visiting them after dark. At this time bucks hang together in bachelor groups.

Cutlery And More

As the season progresses and the temperature cools off, the deer will begin to increase movement. I usually start seeing more movement in the afternoons at this time. This is a good time to also start hunting scrapes because various bucks will begin to start checking them out for many reasons.

Deer movement, especially bucks, will greatly increase in November. As the rut approaches, bucks will start making mistakes as the importance for finding hot does increases. This is your chance to capitalize on these mistakes. I usually like to hunt high in areas where I can see a lot of land to increase my chances of seeing bucks passing through.

As the season ends and food becomes scarce, deer movement patterns are highly predictable. Deer will flock to available food sources and often move to keep warm. Food plots and harvested crop fields are great areas to hunt during this time. Deer will scrap these areas clean of any food that is left.

Wedding Myths & Superstitions

As long as there have been weddings, there have been myths and superstitions to accompany them. Of course, like most things the ideas of myths and superstitions have come from far and wide the world. Some myths are lighthearted and gay, while there are some superstitions that can appear to be quite harsh.

Cutlery And More

1. Concerning rain on the day of the wedding, some say that many tears will be shed in the marriage, while others are thrilled as the occurrence of rain on a wedding day is considered to bring good luck and blessings to the lucky couple. Some even place a statue of the Virgin Mary in the windowsill to ward away rain and bad luck, while others may hang a rosary from the window or clothes line to insure a rain free wedding day. A rainy wedding day also foretells of many children to be born to the wedding couple.

Cutlery And More

2. Concerning myths and superstitions of a shoe and the wedding, long ago, the father would pass one shoe of the bride's to the groom to signify him giving his daughter away in marriage. It is also considered good luck for the groom's mother to throw a shoe at the bride as the couple leaves their reception so that the bride and her mother-in-law would forever be the best of friends. It is also considered to be good luck if a house cat eats from the brides shoe the week of her wedding. In addition, the bride must have a penny in her shoe while being married for good luck and wealth.

3. The brides wedding dress has its own myths and superstitions of colors and wearing. Long ago, it was considered good luck to have a piece of the wedding gown, so then the dress was literally ripped to pieces with the bride still in it. No dress was to be more becoming or longer than the brides wedding dress as she should be the center of attention on her wedding day and it brought good luck. It is considered unlucky for a groom to see his bride in her wedding dress as well as for her to try on the wedding dress more than one time after alterations. It is also good luck for the bride to enter the church of her wedding on her right foot, while walking down the aisle after the wedding, it is customary to remove both wedding rings to ensure there is no trouble for the couple should she remove them at a later time. As well, the bride should have all the bridesmaids sign the bottom of her shoe, and the name that has not been walked off is the next female to marry.

4. The wedding ring is considered sacred and should not be lent to others to try on, this is sure to bring back luck and even the possibility of unfaithfulness. If ever the wedding rings are removed by a bride it must be the groom who returns them to her fingers to continue the good luck.

The Medieval Kitchen - Medieval Appetizer Recipes

For the well-to-do, medieval meals were made of several courses. Displaying extravagance was very important to show others how well off you were. The main course was usually a very elaborate dish. Appetizers were often served between courses or at the end of a meal.

Cutlery And More

Appetizers could be sweet or savory. Meatballs were popular. They could be served in normal ball shapes or sculpted into hedgehogs or fruit. Mini pies could be made with custard or they could be savory. These tiny pasties could be filled with mushrooms, meat or eggs and bacon like a quiche.

Cutlery And More

Medieval appetizers were also very popular at tourneys and hunting parties. Each lady would have her tent set up for her comfort and convenience. She would have finger foods prepared by her cook to serve to those friends who dropped by. Again, the primary reason was to impress them with their extravagant nature, not really to feed her visitors. Using imported cheeses, wines and spices made her look good in front of all her contemporaries.

Diners were expected to bring their own cutlery, which consisted of a knife and spoon. Forks were not used until the 1600s. If you want to plan a medieval meal of your own, serve your guests with trenchers. A trencher was a deep slice of bread with the center scooped out to form a bowl. The trenchers were filled from the dishes of food served for each course. The most important people got the freshest trenchers. Servants, the poor, and the animals got the leftover trencher portions not eaten by the family and guests. Leftover meat and fruit would be saved for the next day's breakfast.

Recipe for Pumpes

Meatballs were often served between courses as an appetizer for the next course. While this recipe is for beef, you can also substitute pork or any other ground meat that you prefer. Serve these with toothpicks at your own parties to impress your guests, just like the medieval ladies of olde.

What You Need

For the meatballs:

1 pound ground beef 2 egg yolks 1/4 cup currants 1 Tablespoon sugar 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon mace 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt

Pinch saffron

4 cups beef broth 1/4 cup red wine

For the sauce:

2 cups almond milk 1 Tablespoon rice flour 3 Tablespoons sugar 1/8 teaspoon mace 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

How to Make It

Mix your ground beef with the egg yolks, sugar, currants, and spices. Form into small balls measuring about an inch in diameter.

Boil broth and wine. Add the meatballs and boil until done; approximately 15 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the broth and set them in a serving dish.

Using a separate pan, mix the almond milk, rice flour, sugar, and mace. Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce the heat. Let it simmer over medium until it thickens. Pour sauce over the pumpes (meatballs) until it just coats them. Serve hot.

Christmas Sales Victorinox Cutlery 6-Inch Curved Boning Knife, Black Fibrox Handle Overview

The R H Forschner by Victorinox Boning Knife features high carbon, stainless steel blade, hand finished at Victorinox in Switzerland by skilled craftsmen. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Victorinox handles are ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension. They provide a natural fit. A good heft and comfortable, positive grip are indications of a well-made knife. A sure-grip handle with a finger guard is valuable feature since the handle inevitably gets greasy, wet, or both. Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of the handle minimize crevices what would offer hospitality to bacteria.
